Ways to ship a Car
There are essentially two different ways to ship a car. You can choose to ship the car by container or via the roll-on/roll-off method (RoRo).
Shipping a car by container
When shipping your car by container, the vehicle is driven into a container, secured, and then loaded onto the ship via the container.
Benefits:
- With container transport, the risk of damage to your car is minimal.
- The risk of theft is virtually eliminated with container shipping.
- The car can be transported on nearly any container ship.
- Customizable options to meet specific needs.
Shipping a car with Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo)
With RoRo transport, the car is driven onto the ship. Upon arrival at the new destination port, the car is then driven off the ship.
Advantages:
- RoRo shipping is a more affordable alternative compared to container transport.
Disadvantages:
Shipping a car via RoRo is slightly riskier than container shipping in terms of potential damage or theft.
RoRo transport can only be used with ships specifically designed for transporting vehicles.
Cost of shipping a car
Several factors determine the cost of shipping a car. These include:
Weight, size, and type:
The larger or heavier the vehicle, the higher the shipping costs will be. Additionally, extra costs may apply for shipping electric vehicles, as additional measures are required to safely ship such vehicles.
Distance and duration:
The greater the distance, the higher the shipping costs will be.
Method of shipping:
Whether you choose container transport or the more affordable roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) method.
Level of risk reduction:
If you wish to add extra protection or insurance for your car during transport, additional costs may apply.

Fuel prices are a key cost factor. Increases in fuel prices are often passed on to the customer.
Cost estimate for shipping a car to North America
The cost to ship a car to or from places like the USA generally ranges between €850 and €1500. This is highly dependent on the port from which the car needs to be shipped. Shipping from the West Coast, for example, tends to be much higher due to the longer distance.
Cost estimate for shipping a car to South America
Shipping a car to or from locations like Aruba, Bonaire, or Curaçao also incurs costs. Shipping costs to and from South America vary significantly depending on the country of departure or destination. The greater the distance, the higher the costs will be.
Note: The above costs are just an indication for shipping a car. Additionally, you will often face extra costs for customs, import duties, insurance, and other additional fees.
Required documents for shipping a car
To ship a car, it’s important that the vehicle has the correct documentation. This typically includes vehicle papers and any insurance documents. While the basic required documents are usually the same for all countries, the exact required and additional documents can vary by destination. It’s advisable to seek proper guidance on the necessary documents before shipping a car. This will help prevent unnecessary delays and costs.
Documents for shipping from the USA
When shipping a car from the USA, you will need at least a ‘Certificate of Title’ (or simply ‘Title’). This document contains information such as the chassis number, license plate, and the vehicle’s owner.
You will also need an ‘Electronic Export Information’ document (EEI). This export document is required for exporting products valued over $2,500 from the USA.
In some cases, additional documents may be needed, such as those for insurance or proof of ownership. These requirements can vary depending on the specific situation.
