RDW

As the regulatory authority for motor vehicles, the RDW falls under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment. If you want a vehicle purchased abroad to be provided with a Dutch registration number, you will have to have the vehicle examined by the RDW. During the inspection, the RDW inspector will assess whether the vehicle is suitable to be allowed on the road in the Netherlands. At the same time, the details for the motor vehicle tax (BPM) declaration will be gathered.

After the vehicle has been cleared through customs by Marlog Car Handling, it must be registered and motor vehicle tax (BPM) paid. Once the BPM has been paid to the tax department, you will receive the Dutch vehicle registration certificate from the RDW. The following documents are required for the inspection of the vehicle:

  • Foreign registration certificate
  • Statement of conformity

The motor vehicle tax (BPM) must be paid at the customs declaration point. The following documents are required to take care of motor vehicle tax (BPM) on imports:

  • The vehicle
  • Motor vehicle tax (BPM) declaration form (download from tax department website)
  • Proof of provenance of the vehicle (foreign vehicle registration certificate)
  • The Single Administrative Document
